French Immersion

At École St. Mary's school, French Immersion students are provided with opportunities to learn and engage in activities to develop their skills in the four different areas of learning French as a second language: oral production, oral comprehension, written production and written comprehension. Students develop their French language skills through stories, songs, group activities and learning about the francophone culture. All students in French Immersion are encouraged to take risks in their personal and social process of learning a second language in a safe and caring environment.  The French Immersion team takes a collaborative approach to learning with a literacy program that begins in kindergarten and follows the students throughout the grades.  French Immersion in Alberta is designed for all students, whether they come from an anglophone or francophone family and parents are often learning at the same time as their children, although the students often delight in teaching their parents!
