Welcome to 3G!

In Language Arts we are working on our reading and story writing.  The students have learned the story map that we will be using for the year.  The mneumonic to remember our story map is: Good Stories Create Positively Lovely EnvironmentS.  The G stands for GOTCHA.  This grabs the readers attention and makes him/her in the story.  The S stands for SETTING.  The students write a description of the setting, which we call TTKP (Time of Day, Time of Year, Kind of Day, and the Year).  The C stands for CHARACTERS.  The students will write a description of the main character, which we call NAPP (Name, Age, Personality, Physical Traits).  The P stands for PROBLEML stands for LEAD.  The lead is the students connection between their gotcha and the beginning of their story.  For example is the gotcha is "Ring! Ring! Ring!" the lead could be, "Sammy bolted inside the house to answer the phone."  The E stands for EVENTS.  The students remember that they need to write three events, because there are the lines on the E.  The first two events are unsuccessful attempts at solving the problem and the third event is a successful attempt at solving the problem.  The last part of our story is the S, which is the SOLUTION.  Here the student wraps up the story and provides an appropriate finish.

We have  begun our home reading program to practice our reading skills in and out of the classroom.  The home reading program allows students to read at their own pace both with the teacher and at home.  Each book is followed by comprehension questions; as the students progress, so will the level of difficulty of their books.  The reading and writing will be taught using a variety of themes and novel studies during the school year.

Children have a natural curiosity about their surroundings—a desire to explore and investigate, see inside things, find out how things work and find answers to their questions. Learning about science provides a framework for students to understand and interpret the world around them.

Our science program engages students in a process of inquiry and problem solving in which they develop both knowledge and skills. The purpose of the program is to encourage and stimulate children’s learning by nurturing their sense of wonderment, by developing skill and confidence in investigating their surroundings and by building a foundation of experience and understanding upon which later learning can be based.

The science topics we will be covering this year in grade three are:
